Sgt Paternak's status is listed as Missing in Action.
This is dated 26 April 1945 with Date of Death 2 April 1945.
In following documents this is corrected to 26 May 1945.
The Finding of Death was issued 3 April 1946,
one year and one day following loss of the B-29 that Sgt Pasternak
was on.
At this time he had yet to be identified.
In some of these documents Public Law 490 is mentioned.

The second Battle Casualty Report, dated 17 June 1946,
changes his status to Killed in Action, Saipan.
The final Battle Casualty Report has Sgt Pasternak Killed in Action,
Japan.
There is also the notation:
KILLED IN TOKYO WHILE A POW OF THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT
The two Reports of Death were issued before Sgt Pasternak was officially
identified in April 1949.
The first one is dated 2 July 1946 and the second 13 April 1948.
