This is an addendum to Doug's post relative to the location of Tokyo Military Prison and its attached POW camp. Images of the prison and or 1945 images of the Yoyogi Parade Ground have proved to be elusive. Pages within the S/Sgt Irvin Casper Ellingson IDPF do offer hints as to were the prison was located. Postwar circa 1947 the Yoyogi Parade Ground was seized with the purpose of turning this area into a US military housing complex known as Washington Heights. In Sept 1947 during construction of this base is when the cremated remains of these 62 AAF airmen were discovered in the remnants of what once was the Tokyo Military Prison. In the IDPF commentary of these remains recovery it is noted that a container of remains was removed from the prison and delivered to the Washington Heights Administration Building about 200 yards from the prison location. Attached are two maps of Washington Heights, one clearly identifies the Admin Building (a small building), the other larger image only shows the Admin Building as a black square west of the larger PX Commissary building. Also attached is an early 1945 aerial photo of Tokyo with inset locations including the Yoyogi Parade Ground. |
