SSgt Irvin Casper Ellingson
Tokyo Military Prison Fire
Was He There ?
Page 1

There are a few hints in SSgt Ellingson's IDPF that he may not have been in the Tokyo Military Prison on 25-26 May 1945. The documents in these pages are from the IDPF of Sgt John Welsh and I am puzzled as to why they are not also in SSgt Ellingson's file.

In this first page is a list of X numbers along with the name of a POW with the words " show a favorable comparison ". SSgt Ellingson is X-212 and this preliminary association was later over ruled.

Pages 2 and 3 have portions of a long document and only selected pages are presented here. The main topic of this document is to establish that a man who died in the fire actually was there. This was accomplised by interviewing POWs who survived the War and were able to provide details of their time in the Tokyo Military Prison prior to the May fire.

There is a Paragraph 16 with the name of McGrath and his stating that he saw SSgt Ellingson in the Prison. As noted by Elizabeth Ridgeway in the Report of Death found in the third page of Official Documents, this is the only mention of SSgt Ellingson being there. There is a question or two about McGrath and a suggestion to re-interview him.
