2nd Lt Harry James Foley
Osaka Castle
Official Documents
Page 1

Below are four formal documents concerning Lt Foley's death. The first is a Battle Casualty Report dated
5 June 1945 followed by a Finding of Death with no date shown but most likely 6 May 1946. At this time
Lt Foley was not identified and still considered Missing in Action.

The last two documents, Battle Casualty Report and Report of Death, are both dated six months before
Lt Harry J Foley was identified. Each states date of death as 15 August 1945, with the Battle Casualty Report indicating that he died while a Prisoner of War at Osaka.

Page 2 contains four pages of a second Report of Death written as a narrative by Elizabeth Ridgway. This report is dated 17 October 1948. There are 12 Paragraphs in this report which includes a few details of the other crew members who were at Osaka. Within Paragraph 8 is the statement ' definitely identified as being captured and "believed" to be executed on 15 August 1945 '.

There is no question that Lt Foley was identified. However, there is never a clear statement of the date of his death and the manner in which he died. I therefore regard the 15 August 1945 date as an administrative decision.
