Sgt John William Meagher's journey home began on 3 May 1949 when
his identity was formally approved by the US Army.
That day a letter was sent to his parents providing details of his
identification along with a form requesting their wishes for how their
son's remains should be handled.
His remains departed the American Graves Registration Port
at Yokohama on 22 August 1949.
The US Army Transport Cardinal O'Connell arrived at
Fort Mason, San Francisco, on 12 September 1949.
His remains were then transferred by rail to the Distribution Center
#1
in Brooklyn New York, arriving 19 September 1949.
Sgt Meagher and the remains of five other men were transported by
rail to Washington, DC, on 3 October 1949.
From Union Station they then proceeded to their final resting place
in Arlington National Cemetery.
