Sgt John William Meagher
Tokyo Military Prison
Correspondence

Page 1

The correspondence in this section covers the period from 14 September 1946 through 30 March 1948.
During this time Sgt Meagher's mother, Mrs Cloe Meagher, wrote three letters:

The first was written 14 Sep 1946 to the Adjutant General

On 3 Jan 1947 she wrote a letter to General Douglas MacArthur

The third was written 28 January 1948 to the Quartermaster General

The first document on this page is the Identification Checklist dated 23 March 1949.
This was written by Christine M Hayden and she provides a
summary of the entire Hibbard Crew's status.
( Next to arrow in bottom half of the page )

Sgt John W Meagher is stated as of this date as being identified.
However, formal approval of his remains being identified
did not take place until early May 1949.

Within these pages are the letters written by Mrs Meagher,
replies from various departments in the Army, and internal correspondence.

There is conflicting information in the early letters sent to Mrs Meagher.
It was not until a letter dated 7 May 1947 from
the Office of the Quartermaster General that this was cleared up.

This ambiguity focused on statements that remains
were buried in USAF Yokohama #1 Cemetery.
The initial wording made it seem that the identity of
each man was known.

In her letters, Mrs Meagher was concerned about the status of her son as well as
the other crew members who were on the B-29 lost 7 April 1945.
