The first steps in Sgt Thaddeus Joseph Pasternak's journey home began
shortly after formal identification of his remains in April 1949.

The below letter to Mr Joseph Pasternak, dated 6 May 1949, began the process.

The letter is from Major James F Smith, Memorial Division, to Mr Pasternak.
He was informed of his son's status and
the necessity of completing the form titled
Request for Disposition of Remains.

This form is at the bottom of this page.

The US Army Transport Cardinal O'Connell carried Sgt Pasternak's
remains across the Pacific from Yokohama to Fort Mason in San Francisco.

In the above photo, the Cardinal O'Connell is passing under the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, perhaps sailing to the Oakland Army Base.
