Sgt Otto John Marek's journey home from Yokohama to Chicago began with a letter to his father from the Quartermaster General. He was asked to fill out and submit the form 'Request for Disposition of Remains '.

This took place on 3 May 1949 and was followed by his remains being
placed onto the USAT Cardinal O'Connell in Yokohama on 22 August 1949.

The Cardinal O'Connell steamed east to Fort Mason in San Francisco Bay, arriving
12 September 1949. From there his remains were transported by rail to
Distribution Center 1 located in Brooklyn, New York,
arriving 19 September 1949.

His final step of the journey home was by rail to Chicago
where his remains arrived on 10 October 1949.
