An unusual aspect of SSgt Brown's IDPF is that
there is no correspondence either to or from his wife, Mrs Roma Jean
Brown.
The following six documents were issued by the War Department.
Some of the documents have a hand written note stating
the date that a letter or telegram was sent to his wife Roma Jean Brown.
However, none of
these letters are in SSgt Brown's IDPF
The first document is the Battle Casualty Report ( BCR
)
issued on 5 June 1945.
SSgt Brown's status is
Missing in Action since 29 April 1945
Next is is the document titled
Finding of Death.
This was issued one year and one day after he was declared MIA.
His Date of Death is now presumed to be 30 April 1946.
On 13 July 1946 the second BCR keeps the same
date of death but changes his status to
Killed in Action .
Around the same date, the first Report of Death was issued.
Date of Death remains 29 April 1945 with status now Killed in Action.
Information acquired during the investigations concerning
the
Yokohama War Trials led to changes in both the BCR and Report of Death.
The dates in these documents are January and February 1950.
Each now states Date of Death as 20 June 1950.
The BCR includes the statement:
KILLED AS RESULT OF EXECUTION
WHILE POW OF JAPANESE GOVT

SSgt Billy Joe Brown's remains were never recovered.
His status in some documents reads
KILLED IN ACTION - REMAINS NOT RECOVERABLE
