Osaka
Shinodayama Maneuver Area
Identification
Page 1

Sgt Sparks' Recovery took place 16 April 1946 and he was initially designated as UNKNOWN X-28.
His remains were transported to United States Armed Forces ( USAF ) Yokohama Cemetery #1.

There he was redesignated as UNKNOWN X-420.
His identification in the field took place in June 1946
and was approved 15 October 1946.

At this time Identification in the Field was an accepted practice of the Graves Registration Service.
The basis for Sgt Sparks' identification were laundry marks on his clothing and
a gold ring from Durham High School with the date 1943.

At some point the Graves Registration Service was discovering errors with
Field Identification and a more formal process was begun.

A few pages from
Final Disposition of World War II Dead 1945-1951
that address this problem are in
Page 2

The first document is a letter to Mr Lee Roy Sparks from
Major General T.B. Larkin, the Quartermaster General,
informing Mr Sparks of his son's current burial location.

In the last sentence Mr Sparks is notified that at a later date a form
will be sent concerning the family's decision concerning burial location.
This form is in the

Coming Home section.

The remaining documents are fairly easy to read and
go through the steps that led to SSgt Logan Sparks' identification.
