The below documents provide a timeline of Sgt Welsh's return home.
In the Disinterment Directive are two dates.
On 27 Jan 1949 Sgt Welsh's remains were disintered and
then transported to the American Graves Registration Service ( AGRS
)
Port Facility on 7 February 1949.
Most likely the 15 July 1949 date in the upper right section of
the form is date that this form was completed.
Following the Disinterment Directive is the form
Record of Custodial Transfer.
Sgt Welsh's remains were at the AGRS Port Facility in Yokohama
until 22 August 1949. On that date his remains were placed
aboard the US Army Transport Cardinal O'Connell.
By 12 September 1949 the Cardinal O'Connell
had arrived at Fort Mason, San Francisco.
From there his journey home continued by rail to
Distribution Center #1 located at
the Brooklyn Army Base, arriving 19 September 1949.
Following this form is a letter or telegram sent to Mrs Welsh notifying
her
that her son's remains were enroute to the United States.
This is followed by a newspaper article from the 11 September 1949
Chicago Tribune.
Sgt John W Welsh is one of 33 men arriving in the US on 13 September
1949.
