Sgt Otto John Marek
Tokyo Military Prison
Recovery and Identification
Page 1

Recovery of Sgt Marek's remains at the Tokyo Military Prison took place on 21 February 1946.
At that time his remains were designated as XX-Z.
Later, most likely at Yokohama, this was changed to X-234.

It was not until 9 April 1949 that X-234 was officially declared to be Sgt Otto John Marek.

You will be able to follow this journey through the five pages in this section.

Below are documents from Michael Krehl who scanned ~2,000 pages of
War Crime Trial documents related to the Tokyo Military Prison fire.

This was done at the Maryland NARA facility.

One of the steps to help identify those men who were not
immediately identifiable was to interview former POWs
who were in the Tokyo Kempei Tai Headquarters
at the same time as these men.

The original file contains 19-20 pages of these documents
and three are presented here.

Each concerns Sgt Marek and statements of POWs
who saw him prior to his transfer to the Tokyo Military Prison.
