Most of the below information is from her son Ray Batvinis

Mary Agnes Shiber was born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
Following her graduation from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1934,
she moved to Islip, Long Island, New York.

The reason for her moving so far from home is not known.

She began nursing school at the Central Islip State Hospital,
finishing her studies in 1938.

During her early years at the Hospital she rose to positions first as
Charge Nurse - Male Adm Service and then
Charge Nurse - Operating Room

 

While there she met her future husband, Joseph Edward Batvinis, Jr .
His position at the hospital was electrician.

He was born in Connecticut on 17 March 1912.

They were married 30 April 1939.

The 1940 Census has living on Carleton Avenue in Islip.
His registration card is dated 16 October 1940 and living at this residence.

Joseph Batvinis enlisted in the Army on 6 April 1942.
There is no further information about his time in the military.

Mary entered the Nurse Cadet Corps while at Central Islip State Hospital and
pages form PG 400 and PG 400A are below.

The last document on this page is from the hospital and
it appears that Mary's last day of work there was 16 November 1945.

This very well could have been a temporary situation,
possibly because of the requirement to take maternity leave
prior to the birth of her son Ray.

Joseph's parents were living in or close to Islip and
when Mary returned to work at the hospital,
the grandparents took care of Ray during the day.

Joseph died 30 November 1983 and his remains are in
Forest Hills Memorial Park in Palm City, Florida.

It is not known when Joseph and Mary moved to Florida.

Mary did move back to Bowie Maryland and her death took place on May 8, 2015.
Her remains are now with her husband in Palm City.
