Following his identification in 1946 , Sgt Sparks' remains had been
buried at
US Armed Forces Cemetery Yokohama #1
His remains were disintered 24 August 1948 and transported to
the Graves Registration Port Facility in Yokohama.
On 17 January 1949 his remains were placed on board
US Army Transport STAR REEFER,
arriving at Fort Mason, San Francisco, on 18 February 1949.
His journey home continued by rail to
Distribution Center #5, Atlanta General Depot,
arriving early March 1949.
In early February his mother, Mrs Emmie Sparks, had been notified
that her son's remains were enroute to the United States.
She was asked to confirm that they would be
transported to a funeral home in Durham North Carolina.
The last document is Receipt of Remains.
During the morning of 30 March 1949 the final step of
his journey home began.
The train departed Atlanta at 0900 and arrived in Durham that evening
at 8:50 pm.
Services were held the following afternoon at the Maplewood Cemetery.
