On the night of 25-26 May 1945 the target
of XXI Bomber Command Mission Number 183
was the Tokyo Urban Area.

There were 464 B-29s from the 58th, 73rd, 313th, and 314th Bomb Wings
participating in this Mission.

During the mission the Tokyo Military Prison caught fire.

All of the 450 - 500 Japanese military and political prisoners were released.

American POWs in Cell Block #4 were either
cut down as they attempted to escape or died in the fire.

The current area where the
Tokyo Military Prison and Yoyogi Parade Grounds
were located is in the first map.

In May 1945 the Yoyogi Parade Grounds were
directly across the street from the Prison.

This is followed by additional maps of:

Eastern District Kempei Tai Headquarters,

Imperial Palace,

Yoyogi Parade Grounds

and the Tokyo Military Prison

At the bottom of the page is an aerial view of The Prison.

Following capture, POWs were taken to
the Eastern District Kempei Tai Headquarters.

Some died there and were buried in Koishikawa Military Cemetery.
Others were transferred to the Tokyo Military Prison .

In Page 2 is a list of 46 of the 62 POWs and their date of entry into the prison.
