These three documents from 73rd Bomb Wing Mission #63 Report
focus on the rescue of B-29 crew members by the Gato (SS 212).
She was on her 12th War Patrol and her duties included
being on LIFEGUARD duty and prowling for targets when not on station.
The first teletype was sent to XXI Bomber Command by Brigadier General
Emmett O'Donnell.
T-12 ( 12V607) was lost over the target and 11 crew members of T-4 (4V607)
bailed out.
V607 was the Call Sign ( Victor Number ) for the 498th Bomb Group
In the second teletype General O'Donnell informed the four Groups in
the 73rd Bomb Wing
that Jack Cannon, 499th Bomb Group, had been rescued.
The captain of the SS Gato sent a message to ComSubPac
who in turn forwarded this to General O'Donnell.
In there are the names of the 10 men rescued as of this date by the
Gato.
Following this rescue the Gato continued her search for the other five
crew members.
