At the Koishikawa Military Cemetery
Sgt Walk's remains were designated as X-M.
When his remains arrived at
United States Armed Forces ( USAF ) Cemetery #1, Yokohama,
this was changed to X-305.
Sgt Walter Walk's identification took place in two stages.
The first was done
In The Field
and was based on
laundry marks found on his clothing.
This was standard practice during the early days of identifying remains.
Errors were discovered and the process was changed to
identify remains on the basis of dental records and skeletal characteristics.
This change involved the Central Identity Point and appears in Page
3 .
The first document is the Report of Death issued 26 March 1946
and is based upon preliminary information.
Sgt Walk was not formally identified until 14 April 1949.
Next is the Report of Disinterment for Identification dated 11 March
1946.
His laundry mark is highlighted in red.
A similar document was issued March 1947 and Sgt Walk is still X-305.
Two Reports of Interment dated 8 April 1946 and March 1948
contain updated information.
Each states Identification in the Field is approved by Lt Col Metz.
