73rd Bomb Wing Mission No. 10 was the fourth flown by Major Goldsworthy.
His Pilot on the first three missions was 2nd Lt Sollock.
He was bumped off this one by Colonel King
who was flying as Group Commander.
There is no information, such as Load Lists,
to know if all the regular crew flew on the previous three missions.
This was a daylight mission with the B-29s flying in formation.
The target of this mission was Number 357, Musashino Aircraft Plant.
In following months this target was bombed at
least a dozen times with no significant damage done.
Five B-29s from the 73rd Bomb Wing were lost during this mission.
The complete Mission Report contains 247 pages.
Presented here is a small selection.
Major Goldsworthy's B-29 was Z Square 1, Serial number 42-24656.
His B-29 did bomb the target but was
then attacked by several Japanese fighters.
Details are in the following pages.
_______________________________________
As time went on, the early mission reports improved
with different formats and additional information.
An example follows the below Mission Cover Page.
The first two pages, titled Mission Schedule Report,
would become the Mission Blackboard at
73rd Bomb Wing Mission Control.
Major Goldsworthy's name is at the bottom of the
first Mission Schedule page.
Within the REMARKS column is the order of takeoff.
______________________
This is followed by two pages from the
TELETYPED
MISSION INTERROGATION REPORT
In the first page is a description of how
Major Goldsworthy's B-29 was damaged and lost.
1V534 is the call sign for
B-29 tail #1, 500th Bomb Group.
This is followed by a request for the load list.
The next request is for a complete list of everyone on board
with name, position, and serial numbers.
Note that Major Goldsworthy is listed as P instead of AC
( Aircraft Commander ).
The Aircraft Commander sat in the left side seat
while the Pilot was in the right side.
This led to a question of who was flying Co-Pilot ( Pilot )
The presumption was one of the Colonels.
